Ministers and government officials from a number of African countries have invited Indians to invest in their countries’ mineral mining, but added that they would much prefer that the mined goods would remain in Africa during the manufacturing stage.

A sharp rise in the past few days in polished diamond goods has caused many to express a feeling of uncertainty. According to the IDEX Online Global Polished Diamond Price Index, average prices have increased by 5.8 percent since January.

> Julius Klein Opens Diamond Polishing Plant in Namibia

DTC Sightholder the Julius Klein Group and its Namibian partner, the Dinamo Group have opened a new diamond manufacturing facility and corporate office in Windhoek. JKD Namibia (Pty) Ltd is the Julius Klein Group’s second manufacturing facility in southern Africa. The other is in Johannesburg, South Africa.

> IGI Launches Polished Diamond Grading Program in Botswana
The International Gemological Institute’s (IGI) School of Gemology conducted its inaugural corporate Polished Diamond Grading Program in Botswana for Pluczenik Diamonds Botswana (PTY) Ltd. The 10-day course was held in January at Pluczenik in Gaborone.

>DTC Officially Launches in Botswana with Diamond Sorting Facility
The Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) has officially launched in Botswana with the opening Tuesday of its diamond sorting facility in Gaborone. DTCB will be the largest and most sophisticated rough diamond sorting and valuing operation in the world, sorting and valuing in excess of 34 million carats a year of Debswana’s production, according to De Beers.

> Swatch Group 2007 Net Income Surpasses $1 Billion
The Swatch Group reported that its net income for 2007 exceeded CHF1 billion for the first time. Total net income reached CHF1.015 billion ($1.028 billion), and net sales totaled CHF5.646 billion ($5.722 billion), a 19.69 percent rise over 2006.

> Angola Still Aiming for 10 Million Carat Annual Production
After failing to meet its 10 million carat production goal in 2006 and again in 2007, Angola is forecasting it will succeed in meeting its goal this year. In 2006, the country produced 9.4 million carats, and production rose to 9.7 million carats last year.
