Multi commodity miner BHP Billiton on Wednesday posted $50.2 billion in revenues for fiscal 2009. Profit after taxation is stated at $8.13 billion after a year of low commodity prices and decreased demand. Diamond sales, according to the company, represent about two percent of current world rough diamond supply by weight and approximately six percent by value. |

> Bond Holders Want Leviev to Put up Money or Relinquish Control of Company
Israeli diamond giant Lev Leviev is finding that the financial woes of his Africa-Israel conglomerate may affect his diamond accumulated riches. After the company announced it may not be able to meet financial obligations, it offered to convert a $1.2 billion debt into shares worth just $586 million. The offer angered financial institutions, which demanded that Leviev either relinquish control of the company or bring money “from home.” |

Even though worldwide sales were down 16 percent, world-renowned jeweler Tiffany & Co., posted a solid, though diminished, profit for the July ended quarter. Quarterly revenues for the company were $612.5 million, and after-tax earnings were $56.8 million, above Wall Street forecasts. As Tiffany’s vice president of investor relations, Mark L. Aaron, said, “It appears to us that the tide may be slowly turning in our favor.”

> Three Countries Accused of Using Child Labor in Diamond Mines
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DROC), Liberia and Sierra Leone use child labor in their diamond activities, according to a recent report by the U.S. Department of Labor. Sierra Leone is also accused of using forced labor in its diamond industry. The three are just a few of the countries that are accused of using children to produce a long list of products that also includes gold, silver and gems.
