> The Human Rights Debate within the Kimberly Process
An estimated 200 officials representing 73 countries participating in the Kimberley Process will convene in Namibia for its “intersessional meeting.” During the meeting, debates will range from items such as whether public warnings should be issued for fake KP certificates, to items such as a proposal to expand the scheme’s mandate.

Markets continue their jig as they gingerly steady. Rounds in the 0.70-1.50 cts. continue to be a reliable source of income for traders. Good makes matched by VS+ categories are particularly solid. This suggests that while the recession is hitting people hard, they are paring down purchases, focusing on a better quality diamond they can afford. Ongoing is the disparity between higher prices for rough goods because of a dry pipeline, and the lower prices manufacturers want to pay citing economic uncertainties.

Namdeb plans to resume diamond mining operations in July, after a three-month production hiatus, as parent company De Beers is starting to see the first signs of recovery in demand for rough diamonds. The company is a 50:50 joint venture with Namibia’s government.
