> IDEX Online Research: Polished Diamond Prices Continue to Slip in January
> Global polished diamond prices softened further in January 2009, continuing a trend that began late in the third quarter of last year. Prices softened as the global recession caused consumer demand to slacken in almost all markets around the world. Average polished diamond prices declined in January by 1.9 percent compared to December 2008.

> Botswana Expects a 50% Decline in 2009 Diamond Revenues
Botswana’s diamond production declined to 32.6 million carats in 2008 compared to 33.8 million carats in 2007, shrinking 3.5 percent. Sales, however, fell 17 percent to an estimated at 28.9 million carats, according to Minister of Finance and Development Planning Baledzi Gaolathe.

> 6.6% Rise in Swatch 2008 Watch & Jewelry Sales
Swiss watch maker Swatch reported total group sales of CHF 5.966 billion in 2008, rising 4.3 percent in local currencies and 0.4 percent in Swiss Francs. Doing well in a tough economic environment, watch and jewelry sales increased 6.6 percent at constant rates and 1.8 percent in Swiss francs.

> EU Calls for Zimbabwe Diamond Probe
The European Union called on Monday for a probe into Zimbabwe’s diamond industry, EU officials in Brussels were quoted by Reuters. The EU also added 27 individuals and 36 companies to internationally imposed sanctions because of their links to suspected human rights abuses.

> DTC Sight 1: Reduced Supply, Shine: Christmas Sales below Expectations
U.S. diamond jewelry Christmas sales fell more than De Beers thought they would, falling 15 percent - 20 percent year-over-year, Diamond Trading Company (DTC) Managing Director Varda Shine said. One of the DTC’s responses is to reduce supply by 50 percent in the first half of the year.
