> First Day at First, The Vicenza Winter Show
The 2008 trade fair calendar got underway Sunday with the opening of “First,” the new name for the Vicenza Winter show. The name change represents just one of the changes taking place here in Vicenza, following last year's corporate reorganization that turned Vicenza Fair, under new management, into a limited company with plans for refocusing the shows under its remit.

> NRF: Holiday Sales Marked Lowest Growth Since 2002
Overall holiday sales in 2007 rose a mere 3 percent over the previous year to $469.9 billion, weaker than the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) projected 4 percent holiday forecast. This represents the lowest holiday season growth since 2002, when sales rose 1.3 percent.

Angola’s National Police recently deported at least 4,000 foreigners found to be dealing diamonds illegally in the country’s northeastern Lunda Norte province, according
to Anglop.

Petra Diamonds Limited announced Thursday the sale of a 99.43 carat diamond, recently produced from its Sedibeng mine in South Africa. The stone has been sold for $1.305 million, a price of $13,125 per carat (p/c).

> De Beers to Donate R2 Mln to Support Farmers
Developing farmers in the agricultural hub of Kungwini, South Africa, an area near the Cullinan mine, are getting an early Christmas present this year. De Beers, in partnership with the Kungwini Local Municipality, has announced its commitment to develop and expand the area, with a donation of R2 million ($285,905) for the expansion of crop farming projects.
