> De Beers 2007 Sales +3% to $7.03 Bln, Production
51.1 Mln Carats

De Beers announced Friday morning a 3 percent rise in sales, totalling $7.03 billion. The diamond giant mined 5.11 million carats in 2007, in line with production in the previous year. In its 2008 forecast, it said the out look is "tempered by a high level of uncertainty over world market conditions."

> Botswana Warns of Declining Diamond Production and
Its Affects

Debswana’s 2007 diamond production fell in comparison to the year before, and a further decline is expected in 2008, Botswana’s minister of finance and development revealed during his budget speech Monday. Minister Baledzi Gaolathe warned that declining revenues from diamonds may harm the country’s ratings.

> GIA Appoints Marie-Josee Trepanier MD, Southern Africa
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has appointed Marie-Josee Trepanier managing director of Southern Africa, effective February 1. Trepanier will be responsible for providing on-site project management and in-country guidance for the setup of new facilities and support functions for South Africa and Botswana and similar future projects.

> Net Global Gold Sales in 2007 Reach 488 Tons
Gold sales retuned to their “normal levels” in 2007, despite the sharp rise in prices, according to GFMS in a report prepared for Société Générale. Net official sector sales in 2007 are estimated to have reached 488 tons, up by a third year-over-year.

Diamdel held its first online auction of rough diamonds Monday, with a successful conclusion. Diamdel offered 16 lots, and was "delighted" by the response, adding that the auction attendance, participation and results exceeded expectations.
